Help with Digital Files

How to Load a Downloaded Book to Your Kindle

If you’ve downloaded a Kindle-compatible file (usually a .mobi, .azw, or .epub file), here’s how to get it onto your Kindle device or app:

Option 1: Send to Kindle by Email

Find your Kindle email address:

Go to Amazon.com > Manage Your Content and Devices > Preferences tab.

Scroll to Personal Document Settings. You’ll see your Kindle email there (e.g., yourname@kindle.com).

Email the file to your Kindle:

Use the same email that’s associated with your Amazon account.

Attach the file (do not paste it in the body) and send it to your Kindle address.

Within minutes, it should appear on your Kindle or Kindle app.

Make sure your file format is supported (.mobi, .azw, .epub with updated Kindle firmware).

Download Amazon’s Send to Kindle app: https://www.amazon.com/sendtokindle

Install and open the app, then drag and drop your downloaded file into the window.

Choose the device you want to send it to and click Send.

Plug your Kindle into your computer using a USB cable.

Your Kindle will appear as a drive on your computer. Open it.

Drag the downloaded file into the “Documents” folder.

Eject the Kindle safely and unplug. Your book will be available in your Library.

How to Load an .epub File to Your Device or App

Once you’ve downloaded your .epub file, here’s how to read it on the most popular apps and devices:

iPhone or iPad (using Apple Books)

Open the Files app and locate your downloaded .epub file.

Tap and hold the file, then choose Share.

Select Books from the share options.

The file will open in Apple Books and be added to your library automatically.

Open the Google Play Books app.

Tap the profile icon > Play Books settings > Enable PDF uploading and EPUB uploading if not already on.

Open the Files or Downloads app and locate your .epub file.

Tap Share > Choose Upload to Play Books.

It will appear in your Google Play Books library shortly.

Locate the .epub file in your Finder.

Double-click the file, or right-click and choose Open With > Books.

The book will open in Apple Books and be added to your library.

Download and install Calibre (free) from calibre-ebook.com.

Open Calibre and click Add books.

Locate your .epub file and click Open.

The book will now be available in your Calibre library for reading or converting.

Connect your Kobo device to your computer via USB.

On your computer, drag the .epub file into the Kobo eReader’s “Books” folder.

Safely eject your device. The book will appear in your Kobo library.

If you’re using another reading app or device, most will let you drag the file in or share it from your device’s files.

How to Open and Read a PDF File

Once you’ve downloaded your PDF, you can open and read it on almost any device. Here’s how:

On iPhone or iPad

Locate the file in your Files app or Downloads.

Tap the file to open it.

It will open in Apple Books, Preview, or another default viewer.

Tap the Share button if you’d like to save it to Books for easy access later.

Open your Files or Downloads app and tap the PDF file.

It will open in Google PDF Viewer, Google Drive, or another app you’ve installed.

If you don’t have a PDF viewer, you can install one like Adobe Acrobat Reader for free from the Play Store.

Find the file in Finder or Downloads.

Double-click the file to open it in Preview.

You can also right-click > Open With to choose another app like Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Locate your PDF in Downloads or File Explorer.

Double-click to open in Microsoft Edge, Adobe Acrobat, or your default PDF app.

If you need a viewer, Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free and widely used option (get it here).

Need to transfer it to another device?
Email it to yourself, then open the attachment on your other device.

Use AirDrop, Bluetooth, or a file-sharing app like Dropbox or Google Drive.

Most devices already have built-in PDF support, but if your file doesn’t open automatically, a free app like Adobe Acrobat will solve it in seconds.
